Rechteckige unglasierte Schale von Keizan / Rectangular unglazed pot by Keizan

This unglazed rectangular pot is from the Keizan kiln in Tokoname, Japan. It measures 45 x 34 x 10 cm, plus 2,5 feet height. The pot was made from reddish brown clay which contains lighter coloured fireclay grains. This is clay that has already been fired and ground into grains of a certain size, which is added to the still soft, moist clay before processing and improves the stability of large pots during the manufacturing process. The so-called "pear skin effect" also contributes to an attractive surface appearance.

The pot has been in use for several years and has some patina on it, which is hardly visible in the photo, but can be perceived as a darker colour with a slight sheen, especially on the rim of the pot. The development of a beautiful patina on unglazed pots occurs through careful use over many years under the influence of water, fertilizer, weather conditions, hand fat that gets on the pot when it is touched or stroked frequently, and e.g. Camellia oil, which is occasionally applied thinly for maintenance and to clean the pot before an exhibition.

The pot's wall is slightly concave in the upper half and opens significantly upwards.
The upper rim is 3 cm wide and pulled outwards. It harmonizes with the strong branches of a tree with a massive trunk.
There is a belt on the lower edge of the pot's body, directly above the feet, which are stepped with a curved line.
The belt gives the pot an additional contour in the lower area and separates the pot's body from the feet,
which can physically and also visually hold a certain weight. The four corners of the pot each have
a groove-shaped depression from top to bottom, which soften the corners and add an elegant detail to the pot.
This classic pot shape is especially produced by many Japanese and Chinese potters in practically
all sizes and different clay colors
.

It is a typical pot for thick trunk upright conifers, especially pines. The indented corners, the curved pot walls and the curved shape of the feet as well as the warm red-brown colour soften the austerity of the rectangular shape and make the pot suitable also for trees with some movement and for slanting tree shapes.
