Rot bemalte Porzellanschale von / Red-painted porcelain pot by Echizen Hosui

This small painted porcelain pot was created by the potter and porcelain painter with the artist name Echizen Hosui,
who was born in 1936 as Zenzo Yoshida in Fukui Prefecture.
The dimensions of the pot are 13.5 x 9.7 x 3 cm plus 0.7 cm foot height. It is made of muted white porcelain.
The pot's walls and the rim are covered with a transparent glaze on which the motif was
afterwards painted with an orange-red glaze.
It shows two people in a boat and another person ashore. On the far left there is a pine tree and reeds on the shore.
Mountains can be seen in the background, birds flying to the right over the water.
The motif continues around the whole pot, with hilly islands and on the backside two little houses by the sea.
On each foot of the pot you can see a flower and a branch with a few leaves and on the rim, seen from above,
a geometric pattern and a flower in each corner.

The shape of the pot is rectangular with rounded corners and a 1 cm wide rim slightly drawn outwards.
The feet are simple and slightly slanted to the outside.
Traces of processing inside the pot and on its underside reveal that this pot was probably carved
from a solid piece of porcelain mass. So it consists of a single piece and was not assembled from different parts.

Porcelain pots like this, often painted in blue, more rarely in red or multi-colored,
have long been produced in Japan and China for shohin bonsai.
These painted pots are used for deciduous trees and especially for flowering and fruiting species.
A tree with yellow flowers would harmonize particularly well with the red-painted pot shown here,
for example a potentilla, a winter jasmine or a forsythia.

When using such a pot, it should be noted that the motif has a flow direction that must match that of the bonsai tree.
In this case the movement goes to the right, from the tall pine tree on the left edge of the picture
and the mountains over the boat to the bottom right to the water.
If you wanted to plant a tree with the flow direction to the left, you would take the other side of the pot as the front,
on which mountains, trees and houses are concentrated on the right side of the picture and move to the left towards the sea.
