Ovale glasierte Schale von Yamafusa / Oval glazed pot by Yamafusa

This pot was made by Yamafusa in Tokoname, Japan. It is made from leather-coloured clay with a greyish blue glaze. The size is 21 x 16.5 x 4 cm (plus 0.5 cm feet height). It has been used for several years and has gained some patina, the darker staining can be seen especially on the rim of the pot and in the lower part of the wall, above the belt (a bulge surrounding the body of the pot horizontally, often found in the middle, here just above the feet). The once clear blue-grey colour has already become a bit muted and the formerly glossy glaze has become more matt, what is a very desired effect.

The shape of the pot is oval, with a slightly concave arched and opening wall and an outward rim. On the lower end of the pot's body, just above the simple shallow feet, there is an unobtrusive belt. This belt gives the pot some more visual weight in the lower part and, in combination with the shallow simple feet, adds to the stableness. The outward rim provides enough space for a spreading nebari and hints at a wide landscape. The blueish glaze colour produces a nice play of colours with many (autumn) leaf colours from green, yellow to orange and red. This classic pot shape is produced by many potters in practically all sizes.

This is a typical pot for a Japanese maple in an upright shape. As often as in greyish blue colour, you see it in cream, green or dark blue. This pot type can also used for other elegant broad leafed trees in formal or informal upright shapes and also some flowering and fruit bearing tree species are sometimes well dressed with it.
